Reading for my School 2016

Between 18th January and 15th April 2016, all our Year 7s will join 200,000 other students across the country to take part in England’s biggest school reading competition. This gives participants a free online library of over 100 titles by top children’s authors. the chance to win a “Reading Legend” award and a tower of book and even the opportunity to help the College win a £1,000 prize!

Once a student has a log in, they will be able to read those books online, wherever they have internet access. The website (www.readformyschool.co.uk) is fully compatible with most major tablets. The free online library features 100 titles across 9 genres – Humour, Adventure, Mystery & Horror, Non-fiction, Historical Fiction, Science Fiction & Fantasy, Animals & the Wild and Film & TV.

Children can of course also choose to read books in print or that are not part of the online library, and register their books online later – the goal is simply to read as much as possible this term.

There are prizes and awards on offer for the schools where students read the most, and individual awards are also available for children who can be nominated as Reading Legends. Any encouragement that parents and carers can give to your child that supports them as they try to read a little more this term would be invaluable, whatever form it may take. If they do participate in Read for My School fully then your child will reap benefits for themselves as well as for Broadoak.

As a College we can win a whole-school prize by reading as much as possible! If we can read an average of nine books per student throughout the competition. We could win the top prize of a £1,000 voucher, or one of three runners’ up prizes - £500 vouchers!

Your teacher can nominate you to win a Reading Legend award as well as a tower of books! Here are the four awards you can win:

  • Be a Reading Pioneer! Encourage others to read by talking about books, or do a piece of work on your favourite book to be displayed at school.
  • Be a Reading Voyager! Show your teacher you've learned to love reading for pleasure!
  • Be a Reading Conqueror! Show your teacher that you have read more than you would normally during Read for My School.
  • Be a Reading Explorer! Use Read for My School as a chance to read new types of books by new authors!
