Safer Internet Day 9 February

Supporting your child’s safe and responsible use of the Internet

Safer Internet Day – 9 February 2016

As a College we recognise the powerful impact the Internet has on young people’s lives; their ability to access information and guidance is a fantastic support to their learning and personal development.

However, we also know that the Internet poses many risks and that, together, our role is to help young people be as safe in the ‘cyber’ world as we want them to be in the real world.  Many of you may have seen on the BBC the docudrama ‘Murder Games’ about a teenage boy  targeted by an online predator after befriending him while gaming.  This was based on the true story of Breck Bednar, a 14-year-old schoolboy who was lured to his death after being groomed online.  Additional information and support can be found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p03cgtx5.

Unfortunately, we also often have to deal with incidents in College which have been caused by inappropriate use of social media, such as Twitter, Facebook and Snap Chat. As parents/carers there are lots of ways you can monitor and support your child’s use of such sites.  A wealth of resources can be found on the following links.

There will be activities across the College during the week of Safer Internet Day to support our ongoing programme of E Safety.
